Staré Heřminovy lies about 4 km south-south-east of Horní Benešov. The village is part of the Slezská Harta Microregion. It was first recorded in 1338. The prefix Staré distinguishes it from the younger settlement of Nové Heřminovy.

A castle in the centre of the village dates from before 1685 and developed from a reeve's manor. It was remodelled in the Baroque style and later took on a Neoclassical appearance. Near the castle stands the Church of St Wenceslas. Between 1978 and 1990, the village was part of Horní Benešov.
