Široká Niva lies in the Nízký Jeseník area along the Opava River, about eight kilometres north of Bruntál. The village has around 550 residents. Its school brings together a small primary school, a nursery school, an after-school club and a school dining hall.

The village’s landmark is the Baroque Church of St Martin, built between 1718 and 1721. It was decorated by the Liechtenstein court painter A. Griepel. The municipal office is based in a villa built between 1904 and 1907 for local doctor Oskar Hanisch. The Kunov Nature Reserve extends into the municipality; it is floodplain woodland in the Opava floodplain where ostrich fern occurs.
