Rudná pod Pradědem lies in the valley of Rudný potok, between Bruntál and Malá Morávka in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains. The municipality was formed on 1 January 1950 by merging Stará Rudná and Nová Rudná. It has about 360 inhabitants.

The first written record of Stará Rudná, now part of the municipality, dates from 1377. The landmark of the municipality is the Church of St John the Baptist in Stará Rudná, built in its present form in 1812. The Morgenland natural monument lies within the municipality; it is a meadow with specially protected plant species.
